“The growing conversation around AI brought me back to the Surrealists — specifically to the way of creating meaningless imagery that can carry profound weight. I saw the same quality in what machines were generating, and I saw the people it was displacing. Artisans questioning their relevance in an industry mid-collapse. My response was to mix old and new photographs with AI-generated characters — building false moments with genuine emotion, in the spirit of René Magritte and Edward Hopper. My father's favorite painters. Also connecting to memories of my grandfather who I never met. In the end, I believe meaning is what earns a medium the right to be called an artistic creation. But it is comfort that leads us, quietly and willingly, into the arms of automation.”
